St. Patrick’s Day DUIs and Other Crimes to Avoid

As a result of COVID-19 mandates still being in effect, many bars and restaurants in our area have been forced to scale down the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. However, that doesn’t mean that green beer and shenanigans won’t still occur. If you are being charged with a crime during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, you’ll need more than the luck of the Irish to get you through–you’ll need Mazzoni Valvano Szewczyk & Karam. Take a look at these St. Patrick’s Day crimes you won’t find under the rainbow.

DUI

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 1/3 of all fatal crashes nationwide involve alcohol-impaired drivers. Whether you are a college student participating in your own St. Patty’s Day bar-crawl or an adult who is celebrating with friends, know that DUI charges will last far longer than the green beer staining your tongue. If you plan to enjoy holiday-inspired festivities in the coming days, be mindful of the following:

  • Never drink and drive
  • If you plan to drink, have a designated driver or call a shared-ride program
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road or become involved in an accident involving a drunk driver, call 911

In addition, if you are charged with drunk driving, you can face heavy penalties–especially if someone is hurt or killed as a result.

Robbery

Pro tip–Just because you dressed up like a leprechaun, doesn’t mean you should go looking for gold at the end of a rainbow. This is what one person found out after attempting to rob a bank!

In 2010, a Nashville man thought he could find a pot of gold by dressing up like a leprechaun and robbing a bank. The man held up the bank with a gun while taking a sum of money from the teller. After taking off in a getaway car, police eventually found him and his accomplice. One man was fatally injured and the other took his own life while evading the police.

While it cost these felons their lives, if you are charged with a St. Patrick’s Day robbery in Pennsylvania, it could land you behind bars.

Assault

Be it an alcohol-induced fight, or perhaps an altercation in the making, assault charges don’t simply go away because you call holiday-shenanigans. If you are charged with simple or aggravated assault this holiday week and weekend, know that it can land you behind bars and facing expensive fines–especially if you assault a member of law enforcement.
